Bill MacKay and Ryley Walker have a sonic connection that some duos only dream of. After many inspired improvisational sets at various Chicago stages, watering holes, and institutions, Walker-Mackay have forged an iron weave of (mostly!) guitar tapestry, culminating in the forthcoming SpiderBeetleBee continues fluidly down the path of their initial psych-folkblues-raga tandem, brewing further explorations in mixed-and-matched idioms, turning composed melodies inside-out via improvisation, and finding in the blend a pasture between Appalachia and the Highlands.

Watch this conversation between three artistic giants of the 20th century. Phillip Glass, David Byrne and Allen Ginsberg sit down and speak about the man, the myth, the legend that is Arthur Russell. Tonight is night for you to catch this EXCLUSIVE Quad City viewing of the documentary film “Wild Combination” directed by Matt Wolf. This VHS footage is from an electronic press kit for the “Another Thought” compilation that came in 1994 not long after his battle with AIDS.
Check out the new single from Drag City Records’ Dead Rider. The video for “The Ideal” is quite the mind melter. Literally. In the video Todd Rittman auditions new drummers, putting them through a strenuous series of mental & stamina tests. Considering that most music videos are pretty stupid, this one is not. Its a must watch.
Now’s the time to drink deeply from the grail of psych, for its bearers Plastic Crimewave Syndicate are among us once more. From the splatter vinyl to the extra-heavy cardboard sleeve, Crimewave leader Steve Krakow knows how to recast the spell of psych’s golden hour. Such obsessive detail is behind his Galactic Zoo Dossier magazine and in every fuzz-fierce and echo-soaked riff on this new self-titled LP. The music, however, is far from being revivalist or a mere pastiche of past glories. These six heavy and transcendental compositions channel inspiration in a way akin to Loop, Terminal Cheesecake or even Skullflower on a track like “Void 0f Eternity”. lt’s a double pleasure of the old and new. Now, are you ready to dream the dream – or ride the nightmare.”
